How old does a kitten have to be before you buy it?

i'll be getting a kitten soon and i would like to get one thats just taken away from the mom, is that ok?

Usually 3-4 months old; they should be fixed when they reach a reasonable weight, which I think is 2lbs.  Or around 4-5 months old.

Hopefully, by 'buy', you mean from a shelter or rescue group.  That is because no honest breeder will let you have a kitten before at least 8 weeks, and perhaps longer.  And shelters operate pretty well the same.

During the first two months of life, the kitten is being taught everything they need to know for life by their mother.  Taking a kitten away too soon can result in lifelong behavioral problems.

Most kittens that are available are from 10-14 weeks old.  And that is usually appropriate, as they got taught by their mother, and had human contact and care.

Not really, unless the situation is an emergency. Most kittens do best when they stay with Mom and siblings until they are about 12 weeks of age. Lots of time to bond and learn all Mom has to teach them. An older kitten is more confident and will adjust quickly to a new home. And, your kitten is less likely to have health problems. The older kitten is already eating solid food and should have been litter box trained by Mom.

A cat must be AT LEAST 6 weeks old before it can leave its mom but 8 weeks, I think, should really be the minimum. I am glad you are getting your kitten from a shelter, though they are known to take kittens away from mom to early just to get rid of them. Shelter kittens really will need you more if you get one out of the newspaper. Remember to get your new baby spayed/neutered before 5-6 months old. You'll see when you go to the shelter how many homeless kitties there are and we don't need more. Its pretty heartbreaking. Good luck and I hope you find a great little friend. The more you love kitten when they are little the more they love you as they grow up.
