My colombian x rock rooster is almost 5 months old and still has not started crowing yet! And yes, I know it's a rooster.

  1. Roosters mature sexually earlier than the hens, which means they start crowing sooner than the hens lay, which means 3 months is about right. :) There is a tiny chance it's a hen, because sometimes hens do crow. (Not normally) It's most likely a rooster. Find him a nice home somewhere where the owners and neighbors don't mind crowing. :D

  2. About 6 to 8 months. Mine started at 7 months.

  3. Depending on the breed, most roosters don't fully mature until 4-6 months of age.  He might still be a little young, but give him another month or so and he'll probably start trying to crow.  It's actually really funny when they find their voice, because it takes quite a bit of practice to get their full vocal range.  Some of their early attempts are hysterical!

I have one rooster who never finished the full refrain, if you will, and instead of the typical 5 pitch changes, only does 3-4.  He always sounds like someone cut him off in mid sentence.

Give him some more time - roosters crow to establish dominance and territory, and will vocalize more if there are multiple roosters, new hens or chicks hatching.  He may not have much motivation to crow right now, either.  Does he have some hens?  If he wants to mate or feels challenged by another rooster, he should be trying to crow pretty soon.

Enjoy the quiet for now... once they get going, they can be loud and annoying!
