How old does one person have to be to own a gun in the united states?

It is depends on which state you live in, most states you must be 18 but their are a few where you must be 21. The interesting thing about this is their is an age limit to purchase a gun but their is not an age limit to carry or use a gun.

Depends on the type of gun. Long guns can generally be purchased by federal law at 18, handguns require 21. but local laws may differ. pls call your local police to find out exactly.

It depends on the state. There is no age limit in Vermont because they don't have any gun control laws and don't want any. It is 18 in my state for any gun.

The federal laws prohibit anyone under the age of 18 from buying a rifle or shotgun from a federally licensed dealer.

The states can set the age limit for sales from non-federally licensed sources (other citizens, family members, etc).

In addition, the age limit to own may be different that the age limit to purchase. In most states you must be 18 to purchase a firearm but your parents (or somebody else, with your parent's permission) could give you one as a gift regardless of your age.

US Federal law states you must be 18 to purchase and own a long gun, 18 to own and purchase a handgun. However a dealer (FFL holder) is not allowed to sell you a handgun unless you are 21.

The State you live in is allowed to have more stringent laws but not allowed to have less stringent laws.

In other words, your State may not allow anyone under 21 to own a firearm.
