  1. Almost 300 years after the New Spain was created, on September 16, 1810, independence from Spain was declared by Priest Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, in the small town of Dolores, Guanajuato.[18] This was the catalyst for a long war that ended in 1821 which eventually led to the independence and creation of the ephemeral First Mexican Empire. Agustín de Iturbide was the first and only emperor. Two years later, he was deposed by the republican forces. In 1824, a republican constitution was drafted creating the United Mexican States with Guadalupe Victoria as its first President.

  2. Gosh, I was gonna try to answer this one until I saw your comment on go forth and die.  May I recommend that you try it first and see how it works out.

  3. As nfpolaris says, the fight for independence did started on Sept 16 1810, but that does not mean that Mexico became an independent country at that particular moment. It took about 11 years of war to become an independent country.

It was on September 27 1821 when the viceroy Juan O'Donoju signed the declaration of independence.

The country was not a republic until 1824 when the first Constitution was issued. (1822-1823 was the period of the Mexican Empire).
