How old is a dog when it first goes in heat?

Hi I have a yorkie and I'm just wondering when they first start bleeing. I have been putting off getting her fixed and hoping to get it done before she starts bleeding and makes a mess all over the house.

6 mos, so if you really don't want to put her through the birthing, then you can have her spayed,she will thank you.

and dogs should not be bred till at least 24 os old, this way they are mature and can handle the whelping, but any age dog can still have complications, not matter what age...but no younger then 24 mos for the health of the dog

Some small breeds can go into heat less than 6 mo. as some of them reach physical maturity sooner than a large dog.

i have a labrador pup and im getting him neutured at 6 months,its the right time for a male dog and think its the right time for female too!

Anywhere from 6 months on!  You should call your vet tomorrow and set up her appointment!  Did you know if you spay your dog before her first heat cycle you cut down her chance of mammary cancer by over 200%?!  It is true!
