Question:

How old is my baby bunny?

My neighbors gave me a baby English Spot rabbit( who is coincidentally hiding inside my sweatshirt right now), that has it's eyes open; can chew food(carrots, alfalfa pellets, and lettuce); and weighs roughly a single pound, give or take 4 oz. How can I tell how old my bunny is without seeing a vet? (My other animals' vet, whom I trust more than any other vet we've been to, is in NJ, and I'm going to be in Massachusetts for a while, or else I would not be asking...) Is there anything I should be doing in order to keep her healthier for her age, and is she eating correctly?

  1. If your bunny can eat food then it may be six to eight weeks old.  Please do not feed the bunny any green food just yet as it will cause a dangerous case of intestinal gas that may kill it.  Stick to the pellets until it is six months old.  an English spot gets to be a largish animal and won't be mature until it is eight months old.  If you haven't already google The American RAbbit Breeders Association and get information from them

  2. Why not ask the person who gave you the rabbit? Hopefully they will know when it was born.

Do not feed a young rabbit any type of fresh foods. It can end up getting mucoid enteritis and this can kill it. It should only be fed pellets and hay with fresh cool water.

A vet will not be able to tell you how old the rabbit is either. The only way to know absolutely the age of a rabbit is to know when it was born.

  3. From the sound of it, it is probably 7-8 weeks old. Does it hop like a normal rabbit? Or is it wobbly? Does it crawl? Does it fit in your hand? Send me a picture to my email and I can tell ya.
