Okay, first of all I had my daughter on Aug 4th, so I know she is 3 weeks and a day old... :) However! She was born 3 months early, her due date is Oct 25th. I just read something about a ''corrected age'' So I was curious what that meant.

Thanks!

  1. Some babies who are premature develop "slower" I guess you would say. They won't start acting and behaving like a 12 month old, until they are 14 months old (if they were 2 months early). It's not that they are actually "slow" or anything, they are just making up for the time that they should have still been in the womb.

I don't know much about this, but I hope it helps.

  2. Her actual age is 3 weeks and one day old.  :-)  When she starts going to her pediatrician they may do the percentage of where she is as far as her growth, and they will give you the percentage for her actual age, and then adjusted age (how old she would be if she had not been born early.)

  3. I had a preemie who was 6.5 weeks early.  He hit his milestones at closer to his corrected age (meaning his due date) for about 8 months, then started to catch up.  He's now 17 months old, 50th percentile in height and is hitting all of his milestones: he was discharged from our hospital's developmental assessment program for following preemies at 12 months.  Most preemies catch up by age 2.  Bottom line--you'll probably be saying "she's ___ months old but she was 3 months early for at least a year. . ."

You might want to join a support group for parents of premature babies--there are some on-line fora you can find with a Google search.

  4. Your daughter is 22 days old. Corrected age is what doctors use to determine where your child's development is at. For example, doctors do not yet expect your child to be doing the things that a normal 3 week old would be doing because ideally, she wouldn't be 3 weeks old- she would still be inside of you. Many children catch up very quickly and close the gap between their real age and their corrected age. By the age of 5 all noticeable differences should be gone!

  5. your daughter is 3 weeks old.

corrected age refers to developmental milestones in preemies.

so what she should be doing at 3mos old, the dr will measure her on if she is doing it at 6mos as this is her corrected age.

  6. Okay, what that means is when your daughter should be hitting certain milestones she may not quite be there yet, and you should give her that extra 3 months before you start to panic. She should of had another 3 months to develop in womb, so now she has to do it outside, so you shouldn't expect her to be able to reach for things until 6 weeks- 3 months after 10/25, instead of in 3 weeks from now, when she will be techically 6 weeks old. That is corrected age.

    Good luck!

  7. usually when babies are born premature they just don't develop like a full-term baby.  so when your baby is 6 months old she will probably only have the develpment of a 3 month old.

  8. it's not stupid...it's confusing!  i think doctors should explain this.  preemies have 2 ages.  they have the age they are, their birthdate.  but many preemies are delayed in some ways.  so when or if she is evaluated for any services, they will use her corrected age.  for example when she is 6 months old, she would be evaluated as a 3 month old because those 3 months she was early don't count because the delay may be because everything wasnt properly developed.  does that make sense?  so your daughter IS 3 weeks and 1 day old (congrats by the way!).  that's the only age you need to worry about now.  if she is showing problems in some areas, that's when you will hear about her corrected age.  but that's more for doctors and such to worry about.  good luck!

  9. All that means is that developmentally she might be behind.  Most kids sit up at 3 months she may take till 6 months to do it.  But they even out by 1 or 2 years old.  Their body came out earlier (small not as developed) so they need time to catch up.

Your baby is 3 weeks one day old. Her age (time since birth) will never be different.

  10. She is 3 weeks and one day old.

The adjusted age means that you factor in her due date, and she might do a lot of things based on her age had she been born on her due date...so, for instance, if you can expect a child to start crawling at 6 months, she might be 9 months before she starts crawling (6 months adjusted).  That means she would actually be 9 months old, but if you adjust for her being three months early, she would be 6 months.

I know it is confusing, but I hope this helps!  Congratulations!

  11. It's an adjusted age and actual age. An adjusted age is what they would be if they were born on time. People use this age to determine their developemental stages.

I personally think your child is the age of when they were born. using an adjusted age just confuses things,.

  12. I say that corrected age is a bunch of c**p....if you went by that then everyones age would be off....ex...im due Jan 1st but say I have my baby a week late....that doesnt mean my baby is going to be a week older than from when I had him!  Your baby is exactly as you say....3 weeks and 1 day!  Thats why they call it a birth day....its the day of your birth!

  13. Hello.Although she was premature her date of birth is still the actual day she was born on.She may be behind for a while but all preemies have caught up by the time that they start school.

  14. I can't believe your doctor didn't talk to you about this, definately bring it up next visit.  Yes, she is 3 weeks old.  The corrected age is for milestones i.e. at 6 months her corrected age will be 3 months and she should be developing as a 3 month old.

  15. you're daughter doesn't have a corrected age yet because she's not at her due date. Say she comes home on her due date Oct.25th(which is my daughters b-day btw:)) and shes really 3 months old then, then she would be considered a newborn by corrected age. So, Nov.25th she'd be 1 month old corrected age, but would really be 4 months. You use the corrected age for milestones and such because when your daughter was born she was technically still in the womb. You stop using the corrected age until they are 2 or 3 because that's when they're usually caught up. Congrats on your preemie!

  16. It means the time she was due. EG If all babies crawled at 9 months then your babys corrected age for doing this would be at 12 months. But this may not always be the case. She could very well catch up quickly.
