  1. The first public railway on iron track was in Surrey, England and was horse-drawn, 1803.

In 1803 Richard Trevithick was building a steam locomotive for railway use but there is conflicting evidence that it ever ran. An 1804 Trevithick locomotive seems to have worked, Whether this was the 1803 one I don't know.   A full scale replica of one of them has been built and it does run. This was for another railway in England but many miles away from Surrey.

Several attempts at building steam locomotives over the next 20 years were not usually a success but in 1825 George Stephenson drove Locomotion No1 over a 40km track with six wagons full of passengers.

Four years later his "Rocket" locomotive was run at the Rainhill trials to demonstrate the best locomotive.    Stephensons "Rocket", which was much more advanced than

Locomotion No 1 emerged as the winner.  Nearly all steam locomotives from then on used the features demonstrated by "Rocket" including the blast pipe, steam dome, horizontal boiler and non-vertical cylinders.

The oldest locomotive in existence is "Puffing Billy"  which was built in 1813 by William Hedley and was used on a coal mine railway until 1862.  It has two vertical cylinders driving beams  which connected to cranks that were geared to the driving wheels.

It would be 200 years old! but the actual 1st train has long gone, it was built in 1802 by Richard Trevithick at Coalbrookdale - Iron Bridge. There a replica of it at The Iron Bridge Gorge Museums - Blists Hill victorian Town. I have attached a link to their web page and the interactive map, if you click on number 46 the details will come up about the 1st train and it's replica.
