  1. There are really several answers to this, I'll try to answer them all.

    First, there is the "two wheeled vehicle". Invented by Kark von Drais it was made of wood and had no pedals... you just scooted yourself along. This was about 1818.

    The word "bicycle" was coined in France in 1860.

    The Ordinary... or velocipede... or Penny Farthing with a big wheel in the front and little one in the back was introduced about 1871 by James Starley. This was the first that used pedal power efficiently.

    In the late 1880s the "safety bicycle" was first introduced. This bike had 2 wheels the same size and a chain drive by John Starley- James' nephew. This is the precursor to the modern bicycle.
