The Yellowstone area was declared a national park in March 1st of 1872.  It was the world's first national park, according to most accounts.  For at least 11,000 years before that, it was used as homesteading land by indigenous peoples.  The geography of the area continues to evolve, but took its current form after an eruption about 640,000 years ago.  The landscape began to emerge due to a volcanic hotspot 17 million years ago.
