Ballet was created during the 15th century Renaissance court of Italy. It was brought to France during the 17th century (1600's), and King Louis XIV loved it, he formalized it and thus created the Classical ballet technique . That includes all the basic - including pliés.

Plies are a basic ballet movement and are very fundamental. Nearly everything you do involves plies in some way. They've been around as long as ballet has, and trust me, that is far longer than the twentieth century. *rolls eyes* No offence, but really? The twentieth century?
