How old should a kid be before he swims alone?

I am 11 years old and my birthday is in october and i'm a pretty good swimmer but my mom and dad dont think i should swim alone, It's not a public pool it's ours. They will still be home but not watching me. the pool is behind our house about 300 feet away and I can in the shallow end when i'm tippy toes. i have been able to swim since i was 3 or 4

let me tell you something.  it's never safe to swim alone.  have they seen you swim??  have you been taught by an instructor???  maybe you could have them watch you from a window or something just until they feel comfortable.  i'm a parent of 3.  it's never easy to see your baby do anything alone.  they are just being good parents.  give them a chance to see how good you are.  they will feel better about the whole thing.  good luck

I don't think it's wise to swim alone.  Even in public pools, there are lifeguards.  And in some other swimming area, people usually bring friends experienced in swimming or such.  Because if there's an accident or something, then there can at least be another person (to call for help) and/or to attend to the problem directly (which isn't that smart).

Im 14 and my mom wont let me swim alone, some one has to be home. i think it would be better if you had some in the pool with you. I think if you go in for a lil dip it would be fine but not for lap swimming!

you may be a good swimmer but sometimes stuff happens to the best. no matter if your a pro at something or not. also your 11 and still under your parents roof so theres rules you got to follow. it may suck but you got to do what they say. I mean i think you should be good alone if your parents not watch you but just check on you every once in a while..try convincing them with that one, if they still disagree then tuff luck i guess.

You should never swim alone!  Not even when you're an adult!  Anything could happen.  Your parents aren't trying to be mean they're just loving you!

I'm 17 and I don't generally swim alone. Well, I did today because nobody else was home, but they're back now. Suck it up, they just want to be sure you're safe.

Nobody should ever swim alone. there should be at least one other person who has known how to swim for 2 or more years.

No one should swim alone. It is very dangerous even for adults so please do not do this. If they are not wathcing you and you get a cramp or something weird happens, how will they know. With drowning, its all about timing and I don't think they could get to you in time. Don't do it.

cities often have laws about this -ask your parents to get the info.  take a lifeguard & CPR class at the local Red Cross.

Even expert swimmers have had accidents and drowned. You are lucky to have protectivee parents that love and care for you :) I wouldn't allow my kids to swim alone either and I don't have any yet. But I am the oldest of 7 kids so.... Just know that your parents aren't being mean they love you.

I'm also pretty good swimmer and I even swam in the ocean but I still need to be with people that know how to swim and my mom stills worries about me when I get in any body of water and tells me to be careful and never to get into any body of water unsupervised and I'm 23.  Me and my mom are opposites.  Shes deathly afraid of water and I take it like a duck but I understand her because I know that I could drown if I'm not careful.
