How old should you be to use a flat iron?

My mom won't let me use a flat iron because I am too young! I am perfectly fine, she says that I am to soft-skinned. If I get a cut, it's the "end of the world" which is SO not true! I think my mom is really over-protective but when I sit her down, she won't listen to me and just gets annoyed... How old should I be! Serious answers please. :-)

Im going to middle and i already use it so its okay just be careful i moved to much before it burned my ear...(its okay now no marks)

i'd say 12. just make sure not to straighten your hair

everyday or else it'll get dry and brittle:].

also dont use too many products just serums before you straighten it.

The worst you could do is just burn yourself a little. I started using mine at age 10. There's no age limit really. I mean, if your allowed to touch stoves or carry plate of hot food, I think you should be ready to use one.

Age isn't usually the problem. People should be educated by their stylist before using flat irons no matter what age they are. Some people abuse flat irons. I am a stylist and have seen adults use irons obsessively. They leave the iron on their hair too long and/or use it too often. People do not clean their irons or they do not use protecting spray on their hair before using it. Thus damaging their hair beyond repair.

Honestly, there is no real age. I see many very young girls (6 and 7) who have straightened hair.

But in my opinion, to own and use your own straightener, you should probably be in middle school at least. And i don't know how you would cut yourself with a flat iron... but. sure.

well i started using flat iron when i was about 10 i just can't stand my hair and if yu feel comfident thatyou wouldnt burn your self andprove to your mum tht you can use it on ur own and that your masure enough to use it.

I didn't start till this week doing it by myself. I'm 17...isn't that sad well I'm later than everyone else but I wouldn't recommend someone doing on their own till about 13 because a lot of girls are walking around with damaged hair because they started doing their own hair at such a young age. I only started doing my own hair because I'm in college now otherwise I'd be going to the shop and they'd do it for me. So not everyone is straightening their own hair. Some one always has it worse than you remember that.

if you can handle something really hot carefully wihtout dropping it than you can use a flat iron
