How old do you have to be to be a substitute teacher in Massachusetts? I am 18 and going to college in the fall to major in early childhood education. Also, which towns/cities in western MA pay the most? Any tips from subs or teachers would be awesome!

  1. I'm a substitute teacher, but not in MA. Due to the regulations for "No Child Left Behind", schools now have to have highly qualified teachers and substitutes.  In other words, substitutes have to be able to qualify as a teacher - with a teaching degree and a state teaching license.

I've worked as a substitute in two states and had to have a teaching degree and state license in both states in order to sub.

So sorry, you probably won't be able to find work as a substitute teacher.

Since you are going to major in early childhood education, try working at a day care or a pre-school.  Many times they are willing to work around a college student's schedule because they need the number of staff to meet license guidelines and always seem to be looking for staff.
