  1. 5YRS.

he learned it in school. he had to read for 10 minutes a day as a homework. it turned out that i was the one doing the reading since he couldnt' do it   towards march, he started reading a cereal box.  i was shocked!  i have no idea how long he knew how to read.

  2. some children are really good readers, start reading at 3 and 4. others start reading when they start formal schooling 5-6 years.  my son knew the alphabet at 2 1/2 years and has now started reading 3/4letter words.  he'll be learning formally as from september, when he starts grade 1.

however, as a teacher, i'd like to add that early readers are not "always" smarter kids.  i taught 5/6 year olds for 8 years, some children grasped the concept of reading immediately, others staggered behind.  but looking back, some of them are now 13 year olds, whom i've kept contact with...and some early readers, didn't particularly excel in exams etc... so being an early reader doesn't necessarily means that the child will be smarter. there are other things involved, like problem solving, creativity etc...

  3. age 5

The Leapfrog Phonics Factory DVDs were amazing.  One week she showed no interest in reading, the next week she taught herself to read small words.  It's been about 6 months now, and she can read books.

  4. read to them every nite,  then you read a page then tell them to read it to you now,

  5. My oldest daughter could identify all the letters of the alphabet and the sounds each one made at 20 months, and could read pretty much anything at 3. She was tested at 5 and could read on the 4th grade level. We read to her a lot and used alphabet flash cards.

  6. well,

    I started reading a around 4

around grade one I was tested and was at a grade 6 - 8 level.

Have a lot of things around the house to read.

have a message board in the house, thats where I learned to read first after listening to my mom read to me every night.

  7. I was 2 and a half. It was because I went to a place called Montessori.

It is just like a pre-school but they work you harder and they give you harder material to work on. Also my mom and dad read to me every night the same story untill I new the story by heart so then i could read along with them and know what the words were.

    Hope That Helps...

  8. Most kids do not start reading until the back half of kindergarten.  Which for most kids would be 5.5-6yrs old.  They usually come into kindergarten knowing the alphabet upper and lowercase and know the sounds of letters.  They may know a few sight words and expand on the sight word vocabulary.

My advice is to read to your child regularly.  Also work on identifying letters.  You can look at plastic letters, letters on blocks, and make letters out of playdoh.  Also my son learned syllables in kindergarten by clapping everyone's name.  Ex.  Helena is 3 claps Hel-en-a.  The Dr. Seuss beginner books are good to start with.  Have your child pick out a word that he knows when you read together.  Also focus on looking at street signs (STOP), and exit signs also on a calendar each day

According to the step into reading series most kids begin reading between the ages of 3-8

  9. My sister was able to read at 3 years old, BUT my brother never stared to read until 4 ...and we gave him the same help if not more...

I just think all kids are different ,....We read with them every night or had them read and would help them sound out the words ..That way they were learning to sound out the words, and not just having us read to them

  10. start reading to them nightly at age 18 months or so strictly for their enjoyment.  They learn which way the pages turn, they learn those squiggley lines mean something and soon enough  By the time they are 4 or 5 they will be reading too.

I taught my kids phonetically (same way I was taught) and it seemed to work really well.  So first step is the alphabet and letter sounds.
