  1. two and a half. he is an accelerated reader though. he is in third grade and is on a seventh grade reading level

  2. They start in kindergarden, the real basics. By first grade they start books.

  3. My grandmother tells the story of my mother and aunt.  My mum, the elder, had books and was looking at the picture and then looking at the words from about 18 months to two years old although she was a little older before she could read read.  My aunt never got that concept and it was school before she was reading,

I was pretty young when I got the concept.  I was reading by4 or 5 but there were kids who were 5 to 6 years old before they started reading at school.

  4. My oldest son, who is now 30yrs old started reading at age 3yrs.

My middle child, who is now 23 & has a learning disability started reading at age 4yrs...she always loved it when we read books to her & always carried a book around with her & she finally started reading a couple words.

My youngest who is 18yrs old & has a hearing imparment in both ears didn't even start talking until he was 3 yrs. He didn't start reading until the end of kindergarten which he was almost 6yrs. old.

So if you're really asking how old a child "should" start reading...I would say it varies between children. Sometimes children have little disabilities that can slow them down & no child is the same.

The best thing for any child is to sit & read to them & you can start as early as when they are first born.

  5. My oldest son started to learn to read in kindergarten which was this year. He 6 now but still learning to read but on level b. I am very proud of him he graduated kindergarten today and be going to first school next school year.

  6. Well my mom said I started reading at 3 and a half but I am above average..........but she said my sister started reading at 5 and she is average!!!

  7. 5 he was on kindergarden. But don't worry reading can vary from child to child, my boyfriend started talking and reading very late, and he is one of the top students now at his school of Pharmacy, Pharm.D, so don't worry , my son also wasn't easy to start reading but an evaluation revealed that he is actually smarter that expected at his age, he learns everything by himself, I never study with him, like his father from the ear to the brain. jeje

  8. 4 to 5 years of age. We use to read to them and then they started reading on their own.

  9. 4, her first book was a little kid book that she probably just memorized called I Spy.

  10. My oldest, who just graduated kindergarten, learned last fall, when she was 5. My second, who just turned 5, was reading at age 4, because he sat and watched me working with his sister, and learned right along with her. My other three are 4, 2 and 1...I'm sure they will all learn at their own speed. :)

  11. Well, I personally don't have kids, but I started reading at age 4, and I know that it was VERY early. I worked in a daycare, however, and there were children begining to read, starting at 4, all the way up to 7 year olds who were still struggling and could not read independently. Lastly, I am currently one year away form graduating with my BA in Elementary Ed, with a minor in reading. And if I have learned anything, it's that not all kids are the same. Just like any other area of life - everyone develops at their own rate.

  12. my daughter was 3 yrs. old.  When she was 6 mos old I would use big bold flashcards with words, like mommy, daddy, etc.

She read her first book at 3.  I read to her from day 1.  Always

    made excellent grades in school.

  13. i started reading when i was three and i didnt even go to preschool. i had a computer game that tought me how to read and how to count. so yeh about three.

  14. My oldest was about 2 1/2 when she started reading simple things.  Was reading regular books (Amelia Bedelia and American Girl) when she was three.  My middle daughter was about 4, my youngest just started reading this year and turned 5 in April.

  15. kindergarten but like they could read there names in pre school

  16. Both of my kids, who are grown now, started basic reading at 4-5 years old. I taught them phonics. It's  great!

  17. my sister has always been a genius *rolls eyes* i think she read at 2, and by the time she was 4 or 5 she was reading chapter books. (grade three levelish)

  18. My youngest started reading in kindergarten (This year) he is 5.

  19. my sister's daughter started reading at age 3, shocked the heck out of me, but my sister spent a lot of time with her teaching her all kinds of things

  20. Anywhere from 3 to 7 is in the normal range to start reading.  Unsurprisingly, the middle of that range is most common.  A few kids are recognizing words (though rarely actually "reading" unfamiliar words) even earlier; a few are still struggling later.  It's just like the way some kids walk at 8 months and some at 15 months and they're all running around the playground together by age 5.

One of my kids read at 3, two at 4 (though at different levels; one was a strong reader reading chapter books before 5, the other is almost 5 and is just reading very simple things of the "cat sat on the mat" variety).  Who knows when my fourth will start.  But research shows that most early readers have been caught up by their later-starting peers by second grade.  As with most developmental milestones, it's no big deal.  Far more important is that your kids love to read (or be read to).

  21. i started when i was 5ish.  End of kindergarten and by the beggining of first grade i was reading rather well.

  22. don't worry if your kids don't start reading right away. i could read like in first grade, but in second grade i could read fluently and for fun. Not to toot my horn but, now im a very advanced reader and can read at a university level...im in 6th grade :)

some kids aren't ready to read yet when they're young but that dosent mean they're unintelligent

  23. My daughter is four, recognizes all letters, and puts some together as words.  Along with her name she recognizes smaller words like: Yes, No, Dog, Cat, Car, etc. She starts her second year of preschool this Fall, so I'm sure that will contribute to her progression even more.

  24. Our son read first grade books by age 4 (both my husband and I also read by age 4), and by grade one when others were just learning to read, he was reading at the seventh grade level. In K, the teacher used to let him do storytime!

But be assured, most children learn in grade one, around age 6.

  25. My Nieces and Nephew could read simple things (like the d**k and Jane books) when they were in pre-school but, their pre-school teacher was their grandma and very good at recognizing the children who were ready to start to learn to read and which ones weren't.

At the very least, I would think your kids should be able to recognize the alphabet by the time they go into kindergarten.

If yours are starting to read earlier than that well, Congratulations...you have a precocious child on your hands. Just keep getting books that are their age level, there are many good books that are written for the Pre-School level.

  26. On the other end of the spectrum my daughter at 11 started 5th grade was a beginning second grade reading level. She is dyslexic and PCD so reading for her has been slow going and quite challenging

  27. My oldest was reading chapter books in kindergarten - my 2 younger ones started reading simple books in kindergarten, then graduated to chapter books in 1st grade.

  28. My own kids were both about 4.  We worked on their letters and simple words at home.

My grandson had problems, and was put into a reading intervention program when he was in first grade.  This made all the difference in the world for him!  He will never read like a college grad, but he can read well enough to keep up with his class.  Granddaughter began learning at about 3.

  29. i started when i was 2 thats above accelerated reader yeah im an overacheaver kidding

  30. 5 to 7... it really depends on the individual kid, but all kids catch up eventually. I don't think there should ever be too much pressure in the school system to make kids develop exactly like each other, as no two people are the same =)

  31. well i started reading when i was about 4 or younger- in kindergarten. but i could read fluently i think at grade 1 or grade 2 level (cant really remember lol).. i've never had issues with reading, i was always quite a fast reader, ahead of most kids in my year.
