  1. I was 14 when I got my first horse. It was actually pretty easy convincing my mom. I took 4 1/2 years of english riding before I got my gelding, plus on top of that I was a big book worm, always ready about horses and how to take care of them. So I think she knew I was ready to have one!

  2. i was 16 when i first got mine

i'm the only horsey person in a family of peolpe who don' even like dogs or cats! lol

but finally for my 16th birthday my dad bought me a fence, horse and a pony! most girls get a car...nah i would have ahorse anyday!

and of course i took 2 years worth of lessons before that and i read like evry horse book i could find lol

  3. I'm 20, and still don't have my own horse.

BUT, I am leasing for the first time =] it's about as close to owning as I'm going to get. Unfortunately, college costs a fortune, as does gas. Owning is just not an option right now =[

  4. 13-- dont give up hope... dream on.. pray for it-- i did that for 3 years and the day finally came- it works youd be suprised

  5. I was 22.  It was right after I graduated college.  My parents could never be convinced so I had to wait until I could afford it and buy the horse myself.  I now realize why they wouldn't buy one: there is a lot of money and work involved, and I don't think I would have appreciated the horse as much until all that was coming straight from me.

Now I have 3 horses so I'm not COMPLAINING about the money and work, I'm just saying I have more of a sense of value than I would if my parents had bought them for me. ☺

  6. Well i just got my first horse at the age of 16 for my sweet sixteen, but i began leasing him at age 15.

Well i didnt really convince them, he was more of a rescue horse that fell into place. My parents didint want to start leasing him at first, but then they said if i maintain a 3.5 gpa throughout the year, then i could keep him. so at the end of the school year ( near my 16th birthday) our lease ended and he became mine!

ps. it helped to convince my parents becasue he is an older horse, that way he isnt as long as a comitment to them.

  7. I don't have one yet (because boarding prices in my area are crazy). That's the only issue, and my parents are convinced to let me get a horse once we find an affordable barn. The convincing part took begging and proving that I can do it (experience, responsibility, etc.). Wish me luck! :D

  8. I was 12.  I convinced my mom to let me ride, and I rode for two years before I got my own horse.  I was 10 when I started riding, i rode for 2 years, so I was 12 when I got my first horse.  It was not that hard to convince my mom.  She knew I was ready for a horse when I proved to her I could make the commitment.  She knew I could handle and take care of a horse.

  9. I think I was 4 or 5 when I got my first "all my own" pony. He was a evil little monster who was always either scraping me off on a tree branch or throwing me on a rock. My parents were both experienced horse people, so why they got me this pony, I don't know!

Come to think of it, the next 2 or 3 horses they bought for me were kind of nasty too - do you think they were trying to get rid of me???

  10. Still have yet to get one...

  11. I was 8 (kinda young) but I really wanted one so my grampa got me one and trained me and at ten I rode in show for a yr.!

Her name was Kelly and she died!!

  12. I was 34 when I got my first horse and a year later I got my second one.

Never give up hoping - dreams can come true........

Edit - never managed to talk my parents round though.

  13. I got mine for my sixteenth birthday.  It was hard to convince my dad, but my mom had already said that it would be fun to own a horse...She didn't mean she would buy one of course, even though I took it that way.  And she didn't really mean it either seeing as how she is completely terrified of them...but that didn't keep me from poring over the horse traders and internet ads!  Finally I found a horse that I liked and we went out to see him...But he was 4500 dollars more than my 500 dollar budget.  Not including tack.  So it was hard to come up with money since my mom refused to pay more than 500.  But the owner did lower their price to 2800 and, eventually, and after a few scares where other people brought in the full 5000 for him, we bought him.  Here are some pictures...His name is Cass.  He is the five year old bay arabian

  14. i was like 6 i trhink but i dont have one any more

  15. 13. My parents surprised me for my birthday.

  16. I was 11 (1 month from 12), and it was hard, but it was what I truly wanted... My parents can tell by how happy I am with my pony. :)

  17. I got my first loan pony when I was 4; first one that was really mine (bought) at 7.

Not difficult to convince my parents at all; I'm from a very horsey family and my mother sat me and my sisters on Shetlands to teach them how to be good little lead rein ponies. My older sister had a bit of trouble convincing our mother that she didn't want ponies any more, though.

  18. i was 14 and one month, and had been riding for 5 or 6 years (i don't remember) when i got him..

it was incredibly hard to convince them.. no matter how you play it your parents have to pay the bulk of the expenses, and that's hard for them when they're already paying to feed you!

but i had lost 3 or 4 horses and was about to loose Beau and the realized that it really wasn't fair.  They understood i was capable and ready to own one, but for them the money was a big issue (it doesn't help that the cheapest board in my area is $750) so we worked out a deal with my trainer for another girl to continue her one weekly lessons on him, and for me to work one day a week to pay for my lessons..  it made the price ALMOST acceptable, but they knew i deserved it (I'm also an A student who doesn't get into trouble.. so it wasn't hard.. like they would have gotten my one sooner, but money was a problem)

its ALOT of work dealing with a horse, and its a full time thing.  I am unable to do other activities (sports or whatever) because i have Beau.. but at the same time, riding is all i want to do for the rest of my life so its not a huge deal!

  19. 16 1/2 and still haven't gotten my own horse.. ah well :P

They're sooo expensive to take care of... and the medical bills! I'm saving up so that I can have about 2k saved away for any surprise medical bills I might have, then saving up for a horse.... lol

  20. hummmm well i got my first horse when i was 9 and have had horses all my life sadly i had t put hi down due to an entrolift (a rock like thing in his large colin) it was very sad i have been riding for my whole life but started riding extensively around 5 years ago   have fun when you get yours but be careful horses are very addicting i know trust me i have cant stay away from them

if you ever need any horse help email ur ? to me at thr@gmx.us ok super cool ?

i actualy bought stormy (that was my first horses name)all by myself he cost 200$ he was great

  21. I was 5, the pony bolted the first time I sat on her, badly broke my arm and I had to have my favourite polka dot red and white dress cut off me :(

The pony was bought on the condition whoever looked after it got to keep it me 5, or my brother 7. I don't ever remember my brother looking at her. One of the best days I remember my Dad coming home with a new cover for my pony - I hadn't even asked for one, and it was made official that day that the pony was mine :)

That pony turned out to be awesome!

  22. I got my first lease horse when I was 12 and my first real horse when  I was 13.

  23. i am getting one soon and ride with a lady, and do pony club, comps so on. it is the best. they have over 360 acres so it is great they own property all over the place. and she has a daughter who is 13 so we are the same age and i do everything with her.IT IS SO FUN. i might be keeping it at there place.

  25. I had my first horse at 5.

He was a 17.1 hand Appendix!

  26. I was 11 when I got my first pony. I have been riding for 14 years now.

  27. I started riding at 7.

    Leasing at...9 or so.

    Bought at 11.

And now, at 16, I have 5 horses.

It wasn't hard to convince my parents to buy me a horse. They were so tired of all of the restrictions I had due to borrowing (leasing) someone else's horse, they wanted to get my own. And my dad even picked out my first horse. :)

Now, its my parents that are trying to convince me to buy another horse! Haha. :)

  28. I've had them all my life.  My parents lived on a farm, they didn't ride terribely much but they always had a horse or two around.  I started riding when I was about 9 or 10, and more seriously around 13.
