How on earth did Juan Williams get hired by the Washington Post if all he had was a BA in philosphy?

After Juan Williams graduated from college with a BA in philosophy he was immediately hired on at the Washington Post and worked as a journalist and editor and writer. How on earth did that happen? How do you get a job as a journalist if you don't have a journalism degree?
