I was looking at a website for cruises and there are some that are 28 days long!! How do people do that?? I mean I know there's rich people, I'm not shocked that people can afford it, but like if you have job that prestigious how could you get a month off? I guess if you're retired...is that it? Is it all retired people? Please excuse my naivity (is that a word? lol), I am young and know nothing about having a career haha. It's just that I would love to do that someday (who wouldn't? haha) since I love to travel, but I don't see how it's possible....

  1. Either own your own business where you can call in for status or work as a freelancer where it doesn't matter where you are.

I'm a freelance consultant.. I can work from anywhere that their is a phone connection and occasional internet.  Noone knows where I am at an given time.  I keep my "in person" calendar clear for a period of time.. and call in.. or IM the rest.

I've sometimes am "on the road" for 3 or more months at a time.

  2. Money-wise, travel on cruise ship or ocean liner can actually be rather reasonable, depending in large part on your expenditures for the extras -- casino games, shopping, drinking, etc.  With just the ticket, you generally average $200 to $275 per day, and that covers your cabin, food, entertainment, room service, and drinks that are non-alcoholic and not soft drinks (coffee, tea, juice).

Time-wise, some jobs have good schedules for travel, like teaching, while others allow employees to save up their vacation time.  (I worked for state government and was able to carry two years of vacation days.)  Retirement is, of course, completely free for travel!

  3. People who own their own business can often work from wherever they might be, even on a cruise - especially if they have an internet connection- or they can leave other people in charge while they are away.

People who are travel agents and/or have their own travel business can even deduct their travel costs from their income tax as a business expense!

  4. Well I gonna make you even more shocked: Its around the world cruises thats 100 days in length! Thats 3 mounth. 28 days isnt that long after all and time will fly on a cruise ships. Most long cruises tends to be travelling cruises to different areas around the world and youll end up seing many different and exoting places.

Also remember that some holidays on land are 4 weeks as well.

Were all different and some likes calm days at sea or in port and would consider a long cruise paradise on earth.

Yes a 28 days cruise would be expencive but still within many peoples reach at least once in a lifetime. If you have done a number of 7 day cruises youll tend to longing for something else and taking a long cruise could be a real boost. See it as a summer holiday comparing to a winter dito. Johan.

  5. Well you can certainly do this if you are retired.  But you can also do it if you are working and make plans to be away for that long.  Back in the middle of my work career I once took off for 6 weeks on vacation.  I explained to my boss that I wanted the time off to drive with my family across the US and we started planning for me to be off about 8 months in advance.  So by the time my vacation started everyone knew who would be picking up my work while I was gone.

In the work world people commonly take off for a week to 10 days at a time, but a two week vacation is also common.  In many companies and work environments you can "bank" leave; meaning that you can save your off days and use them when you want.  So some people will save their two weeks for this year and take it next year along with next year's two weeks.

Then in Europe people normally have more leave time than we have in the US.  So many times they will take a two week leave twice  a year.

  6. some jobs will let you take a leave of absence, where you don't get paid, but you can take months off.  My job gives me 4 weeks vacation a year, and i can save up to 2 weeks to use the next year, so it is possible for me to take 6 weeks vacation.  Pregnant women take that much time off work all the time, sometimes 6 months.  28 day cruises really aren't that expensive, if you save up for them way in advanced, even teachers can afford them.  Some cruises are 130+ days, thats over 1/3 of a year!  I hope to do a cruise around the world some day.  Also if you are a college student you can save up money while you are in school and then go on the cruise after you graduate, and before you get a new job.  Most of the people on the ship will be retired.  Most union jobs give you alot of time off.

  7. Pretty much your retired, have a LOT of vacation days saved up, own your own business, or are a school teacher and it is summer.  The last one is less likely considering the income. That's all I can think of.

  8. yes i think most are usually retired to have the time and money required to do these longer cruises.

    sounds good though.. doesn't it.

    have a good day.

  9. I went on a 29 day cruise last year from Australia to Los Angeles. First it was not as expensive you you may think, about $11,000 for the two of us. Next we are retired, but not everyone was. When I worked, I got 6 weeks total vacation and I worked for the largest communications company around. I even saw a few kids on this cruise. I think they were home schooled. I saw lots of people doing work from there computers, or at least spending a great deal of sea days at the computers. I have to admit, most on board were retired, but certainly not all. I know firemen can get a lot of time off during the winter and spring months, so that may be your answer for some, I hope I gave you some idea on how people do these long cruises.

  10. people are either retired or on sabattical or have enough people doing what they should be doing and are therefore redundant passive investors..  one needs to take a break once in a while though...
