How or can you clean live sand from your salt water tank?

Have a 55 gallon salt water tank and was wondering how or if you can change or clean your tank sand.

  1. As long as you don't want to use it as a denitrifying bed (where anaerobic areas would develop), you can just stir it up, sending the detritus into the water column where you can easily suck it out of the water or allow the filter to pick it up.  To change it entirely, use a large siphon hose and simply suck it out like you would be vacuuming it.


  2. almost all live sand will come with its own cleaning crew, unless its not really live sand, just leave it be and the critters will do the work
