I've seen a bunch of ways, put up a small fence in the front and grow some vine type things on that, cover it with non-intrusive plants (you dont wantthem fining their way into your gas tank)

make other parts of your garden spectacular so they dont even notice the gas tank

Paint it pink and put a pink hose for a nose, saying it is a sleeping elephant left behind by someone who's stopped drinking.

Harumbah maybe very pale pink?

Depends what else is in your garden but a camouflage net from an Army surplus store could do the trick.

Long term would be some tall plants.

You can't really, because you can't plant things too near it or put fences round it because of the fire risk.  

Blossom: I think they have to stay white to reflect heat away. Nice idea though.
