Question:

How or what should i put for my parakeet so its beak will get trimmed since it looks like its overgrown?

its the same as the question except without going to the vet since its expensive, i mean is there something i can put for it so it can trim its beak on its own or how can I do it?

  1. You can buy a cuttlebone at the pet store.  They will use it to trim their beak and will get extra calcium in their diet.

You can offer your bird natural branches from trees that are not toxic and haven't been sprayed with anything.  You can also offer a "grooming" perch, typically made of cement or sand-embedded material (please don't use sand paper perch covers as they are very hard on birds' feet).  You might also consider a pine cone treat made by Sun Seed.  Birds enjoy digging the treat out of the pine cone and this helps keep the beaks in shape.

    Unfortunately, if your bird's beak is really overgrown, it may require an avian vet to shape it and trim it before your bird is able to keep it in shape himself.  There are also several medical conditions that can cause beak overgrowth.

    I have one bird that tends toward beak overgrowth and the avian vet's fee for trimming and shaping is really minimal.
