How or when can i shift gears using a 4-stroke motorcycle like a honda wave 100R?

i dont have formal schooling on how to drive a motorcycle. i'm quite confused. when i first drove a motorcycle, i just assumed that changing gears is just going downwards all the way. i need to know the correct way on changing gears. pls answer my question.. tnx!
