  1. Are you a green card holder? If so, you can file for citizenship right now and it will take 1-1.5 years to process everything (including the paperwork, interview, passports, etc.).

www.uscis.gov should point you in the right direction.

How have you been in the country for 55 years without a Green Card? Are you illegal? You should have filed for EAD and green card as soon as you got married...

You need to provide more information about what your legal status is in the USA before anyone can tell you what will be involved in becoming a citizen.

  2. He need to talk to a lawyer asap.  On the surface, he is in the US illegally but I am sure that there is more to this than outlined.

  3. He has a lot things going on at his point.

The bottom line is that He can not become a U.S Citizen before becoming a Permanent Resident Holder a.k.a.   Green  Card  Holder.

If his father became a U.S citizen before he was born, then, He may have something to work in his favor.

PS-  I just found out something. Check application I-485

Just go to Google and type I-485

is line in the very end that say that if someone is in the U.S since or before 1971 she or she can apply for adjustment of Status.

Still he is going to  need to hire a lawyer to make sure everything goes with no problem.
