  2. The reason for the redness in the lips is both pigmentation and the number of capillarities which sit immediately below the layers of skin. In the lips there are many more of these tiny vessels, than in most other places on the body.

    Our lips represent the transition between kerantinized and non-keratinized epithelium. For the most part, our skin is entire consist of keratinized epithelium. Keratin are harsh protein filaments and are able to withstand pressure and friction, precisely the function of the epidermis.

    Non-keratinized tissue do not contain these filaments.  Because of the lack of keratin, you can see blood capillaries and the dermis better.

    There are less layers of tissues below our lips than our skin.

    Please note that this is true as well for the mouth. And, it is also true for all 'races' of people. It is just not as obvious in some than with others.
