  1. To paint your metal door clean and lightly sand, apply one coat of  primer,  and use any good grade of exterior paint.  Apply your paint with foam 4" roller to avoid brush marks you will also need small brush to get areas inacessable with roller.

    Good Luck

  2. The door will be grey; that grey is a factory applied primer so you won't need to prime, but to get a good finish you'll need to sand it down with 220-320 grit paper.  This sanding cuts surface impurities and promotes good adhesion of the paint.  Now, DO NOT paint this door with house paints or any latex/acrylic products; use an exterior oil base paint.  Not only will the oil be a better more durable finish, but it will look better, it will in the future be sandable and able to be touched up to look like a new door again; the ame applies to all trim and casings.  You can't effectively sand latex paint, and not much looks worse then a repainted latex doors and trim that aren't properly prep'd.

Oil based paint on trim is the way to go if you want really good aesthetics and real durability.  Sure it's alittle more work to apply and clean up, but worth the effort.  Use a good premium quality brush or a mohair roller which will help you get professional results.  Also, a product readily available in any paint department that speeds the drying time of oil based paints and urethanes is called j*p Drier and when mixed into the paint correctly it will accelerate the dry to touch time down to a couple/few hours.

  3. Careful surface preparation, sandind down with progressively finer sand paper, then use a sandable primer formulated for metal then resand with very fine sandpaper or emery cloth then spray paint for the best finish

  4. I have paint a metal door, and actually stained it to look like a wood door., just painted the base, usually beige, used the stain, and then the polyurethane.............When you look for paint, just look on the back to see if it will cover metal..........I always use a primer too.

    good luck
