How plausible is a scenario from Resident Evil or I am legend?

I was driving through Racoon Valley, TN the other day on my way home to Kentucky. Racoon Valley got me to thinking. Do you think there are any corporations out there like Resident Evil's Umbrella Corporation?

Do you also think a global plague from a virus or such is a plausible idea that could potentially happen?
