Question:

How pleasant is homeschooling in Oklahoma, Missouri, or Indiana?

We are planning to move and are seeking a green state (HSLDA U.S. map describing regulation) with low property taxes. These three states seem like the best ones. What has your experience been like in any of these states? How have your property taxes fluxuated and what do you expect in the way of tax hike surprises. Thanks for your advice

  1. Missouri is AMAZING!! You dont have to do any testing you can use WHATEVER curriculum you want you just have to keep track and do the subjects! REALLY IT IS GREAT!!!

  2. We're in our fifth year of homeschooling in Oklahoma (Tulsa), and we love it.  Homeschooling is constitutionally protected here, so there are really no hoops to jump through.  If you move near Tulsa or OKC, there are large, active homeschooling groups and more opportunities than you could imagine.  (There are groups in the rest of the state as well, but being the largest cities, Tulsa and OKC have the largest groups and most resources.)  There are also many strong co ops, if you're interested in those, and the colleges around here are extremely homeschool-friendly.   We couldn't ask for a better environment in which to homeschool.

Our property taxes haven't fluxuated more than $30 over the past 4 years, and I don't see that changing.  We moved here from southern Cal about 5 years ago, and other than missing the weather, the beach, and Trader Joe's, we love it!

Edit - Melissa, re: Trader Joes...I know, I almost went 3 hours out of my way on a recent vacation just to get to one, lol!

I agree about TX if we ever move from OK - it would be my next choice!

  3. We also homeschool in Oklahoma, and it's easy and amazing. We're in a college town, with a huge, very active homeschool group. We have so many resources in OKC, museums, classes, friendly libraries.

We haven't had much in the way of property tax issues, and no hikes. College tuition is climbing rapidly, but it is supposed to level out this year or next, and I'd be surprised if OU/OSU were the only universities in the nation that were requesting approval for the tuition hikes.

I have no experience with Indiana or Missouri, but if we had to leave Oklahoma, I'd head for Texas, because of their similar homeschooling legislation.

HSMom...I will kill (or maybe just maim) for a Trader Joes LOL
