  1. Spain was SO poor, no one could even pay attention!

    ;o)

I couldn't help it.  I really have no idea about Spain in 1985.

  2. I lived in Spain in 1980-81.

It was much less prosperous than it is now.  There were a lot of people out of work, and most people had to work very hard to earn a living.  I knew lots of people who had two jobs....Oh, yeah, I know lots of people in the US, now who have two jobs...Hmmm.

I thought they seemed a little less wealthy than Americans at the time.  Things like electricity, phone, gasoline, seemed to take up a larger percentage of their paychecks, leaving less for extras, but then, I was a college student, so, maybe that was part of my perception.

Cars were fewer in number than in the US (but then, because of the cities, they still are).  And most seemed to be VERY old, like over twenty years old, unless the person was doing very well, then they had one of those new SEATs.  (only about five years since they had started production).

Many younger people married, and continued to live in the homes of their parents (one or the other) which seemed small by US standards, but that was somewhat more because there simply wasn't enough housing, not so much because they couldn't afford, it just wasn't available.  (baby boomers reaching maturity).

However, anyone could go to University.  Most people were able to travel around the country, and some had interest in travelling outside the country.  (they were pretty insular at the time).

In 1985, they were already moving quickly towards what we see today, a much more affluent society.  But exactly where they were, I can't personally attest to.

  3. they owed me $250, and they still haven't payed me.

  4. Spain was a growing country in 1985. It was still a very young democracy. Since joining the EU Spain has prospered. THis combined with many Brits and Germans migrating here and bringing wealth with them. Many Spaniards in rural areas are still on meagre wages.

Prior to 1980 Spain was much poorer than it is today.

  5. Crazy how the once most richest and powerful country in the world came to a collapse.
