1. They will break even over a period of time, definitely. However, you shud make sure that neighbors dont complain abt the sound and looks.

  2. Honestly? Completely impractical, just another "feel-good" boondoggle.

  3. You should be able to build a decently efficient one for around $200. I know you can get the plans from here for around $49:

  4. They are practical, but, as the other answer said, the neighbors may complain. Also, zoning requirements may not allow their use. You have to check town, county, and state laws, they can all be different.

Also important is if your utility company allows you to sell power back to them. Some do, some don't, and again, local and state laws may apply.

Being able to sell power back to the utility is important, as it allow you to avoid the expense of a large bank of lead acid batteries. Plus it avoids the expense of two sets of electrical wiring in your house, one from the utility, one from the windmill.

And then there is the cost. See how much power you need, multiply by 2 or 3 for reserve, and shop for a windmill, acutally called a wind turbine. Besides the cost of the turbine, factor in the costs of the electronics, the tower, the installation. The power company also wants money to install their equipment.
