  1. There private...but some may have protections..like can't access  youtube, or myspace!

  2. Public wifi spots should, as a general statement, be considered OPEN DOORS!  Meaning you and your computer may be at risk it all depends on how and who setup the system!  Since you have no easy way to know assume NO PRIVACY exists as that is the only safe surfing method.

You should do a quick search for "Wifi Id Theft".  And read the following

    http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/2005-0...  and

    http://www.usatoday.com/tech/wireless/20...

There are tons of others, these two are pretty good.

You should always be very careful when using networks that are not your own.  Is Big Brother Watching assume yes,  Maybe an ID theft attempt, may be worse. So yes assume everything you do on a hot spot is watched.Particularly at small LOCAL hot spots,  If the hot spot is run by T-Mobile AT*T etc you are somewhat safer since they require a login - you just have to be sure it is the real login!

A little paranoia is a good thing when using unknown wireless connections!  It can be very dangerous as well as convenient
