  1. Theoretically, 18 are possible total, 9 for white, 9 for black. In actual, tournament games, 5 queens on the board at once has been recorded multiple times. A number of games that have claimed to have 6 and 7 queens have all been proven fakes, including the famous Alekhine - Grigoriev, Moscow 1915. Check the source if you want more information.
