How quickly is the Earth moving taking into account:

*Orbit around the Sun

*The Solar System's orbit around the arms of the Milky Way

*How quickly the Milky Way is moving

Also how quickly are YOU moving taking into account the above factors and the Earth's actual rotation?

  1. The Earth moves at 18.5 miles (29.8 kilometers) a second in its orbit around the sun and 150 miles (241 kilometers) per second in rotation around the center of the Milky Way galaxy.

  2. I love this question. It would be cool to be able to see the relative vectors of each movement including the earths rotation. I wish it was possible to see a timelapse of my position on the earth's surface from an independant absolute frame of reference.  We are moving much faster than I ever realized!!

  3. Adding to the other poster...

And the galaxy moves within the local group at ??? unit/time.

And the local group is moving toward the center of the Virgo supercluster at ??? unit/time.

And the Virgo cluster is moving toward the ??? at ??? unit / time.

And the universe is expanding in the fourth dimension given a comoving expansion rate of ??? per ???.

    See the point? :)

There really is no meaningful answer to this question unless you specify another object or location in space and ask "Relative to ???, how fast is the earth moving?"

    Enjoy.
