  2. For me they gave me an opportunity to learn from other teachers (especially veteran teachers) and "steal" ideas. Sometimes I can get an idea from one or two people and combine it with my practices to improve my teaching and dealings with parents/students.

When dealing with students, I have found it easier to talk to them one on one and explain what I have seen or heard (as far as bad behavior) and come right out ask if they are behaving that way because they are mad at me or because I have offended them in some way. I sometimes offer an apology for "whatever it is" and ask how "we" can resolve the problem. Most of the time the kids are not aware that what they are doing is obnoxious, offensive, etc and are usually willing to change their behavior. If after talking to them, their behavior doesn't change THEN you have a little more leverage when talking to the parent. Remember, the kids think you'll always be against them, but if you approach them first they'll be more willing to work with you, not against you.

    Good Luck!
