Question:

How rare is it for a freshman sprinter to make state in track?

I ran an 11.2 in the 100 m and a 23.56 in the 200m as an 8th grader. I will be a freshman in high school next year and I'm doing weight training with my football team this summer. First, do I have a legitimate chance of making state finals in Indiana as a freshman? And second, what kind of recognition would I get?

Would it be really special? Or just a "good job" type thing?

  1. i think that a 11.2 for an 8th grader is amazing! i think you a have a legitimate chance of making states as a freshman but you gotta keep your mind on it. if you do make states you will get a lot of attention including attention for colleges.

p.s have you considered cross country becuase it could make you faster at running then football

  2. Well, if you won, you would probably get a medal :)

  3. The 100 is the most common event to see a freshman compete at at high level because it doesn't require years of hard training, it really depends on natural speed. The 400, 800, and shot put I believe is where you'll see little to no freshman at the state level. except I live in new jersey where a freshamn nick vena throws 68' lol.

  4. im sick of hearing of freshman on here running sub 11.4 and asking us if its good, and will you get recognition.what do you expect to hear..sorry man an 11.2 blows you will get no recognition.

  5. If my memory serves me right Indy is a very tough state for track. 11.2 is a solid time for an 8th grader, expecially in PA where I live.

Keep working hard, those weights will help prevent injury so your doing well there.

If you don't make it as a Freshman or even a Sophomore, DO NOT get down on yourself, just work harder, it will pay off, trust me.

  6. i don't know about indiana but in new mexico where i live an 11.2 in 8th grade is really good. but there are so many variables, your district, your school's size etc.

  7. Congrats on those statistics, they are good for you age. You do have a very good chance of making states next year. You just have to keep working hard. It isn't uncommon for a freshman to make states but there are less freshman than any other grades. I qualified for states as a freshman in the 300 hurdles. A lot of the older runners got really mad when I came along infact 2 quit on the team. They didn't think it was fair. I didn't get all too much recognition my freshman or sophmore year but than in my junior year it was like I was a track star. I was in the newspapers and on the internet after like every meet. When I get to junior year I started getting tons of letters for colleges all over the country. Good luck

  8. congrats on that.

our best time in the state history is a 10.4 in KS 5A.

you'll definately be doing yourself some good by playing football, just make sure you continue your training through the winter and don't lose it.

all freshmen have a legit chance of making state, no matter what state you're in as long as you put you're mind to it and train for it.

my school has a send off, and we're recognized on our school's website. www.usd232.org/mvhs >>> athletics on the left hand side, track and field at the bottom. they have updated records and how people did at state. if you get top 7 in finals in KS you get to stand on the podium and get a medal... probably the same where you live.

    good luck and keep training.

[btw. if you're coming in with that time as a freshman, you'll improve as the season progresses. upperclassmen will be pissed if they can't beat you. don't let it get to you and keep your head up. remember, they're just jealous c: ]

  9. i dunno i think thats great but best of luck!

  10. Freshman can definetly make states, if they are serious runners and work hard.

  11. It should not be about wanting to be recognized by others.

But an 11.2 is a good time.  I'm sure it is feasible for you to get sub 11 if you continue to focus.

  12. freshman suck

  13. if you wanna make it to state you are going to train hard....im in illinois in da south suburbs of chicago so im about 20 to 30 minutes away from indiana and indiana runners are like illinois and going down state qualifications r 10.6 in tha 100 and 22.0 for the 200 in illinois...i see you are serious so i did some background for you in indiana da 100 dash winner ran a 10.47.... and 200 ran a 21.23. so to be realistic you will kill on jv level but i doubt state will be in our sites for freshman year....but if you can go down 2 state with your team if they make it so you can get a feel for it because b4 you graduate i can promise you that you will be a top contender in state
