How realistic is it to want to build an electric bicycle??

ok, i got an idea to put a skillsaw motor on a bicycle and use lithium batteries off an electric wheelchair. you guys think it'll work?? any advice or cautions??

I love the phrase: "Necessity is the mother of invention"! I think it's a good motto for thinking outside the box. The other answers are good but I'd suggest looking at a conversion kit, see how it's set up, see if you're missing anything and give it a try. Good luck!

You can simply buy an electric bicycle conversion kit, which is basically just an electric motor you attach to your bicycle.  There are many available, and they've been specifically designed for that purpose.  Splicing something together might be a fun project, but no doubt it wouldn't work nearly as well.

I think you should buy a front wheel with a hub motor and controller rather than throwing something together piecemeal that won't work as well.

It'll work, but be aware that such a vehicle will require insurance, tax, and no less than a provisional driver's license (depending on where you live that is).

Dealing with the weight is going to be tricky.  A bicycle is really not designed for weight.  Getting it down low enough to avoid creating an ill handling beast is a challenge.  Perhaps putting the batteries in low slung panniers would help.
