Question:

How realistic is this based on my race times?

I've been running for a couple of years now, but only seriously for less than a year. I've run 3 half marathons in a 4 month period...these are roughly my times and improvement:

1st: 2:00

2nd: 1:58

3rd: 1:50

Is it realistic that I will ever be able to run a half marathon in the 1:30's? With training and time? I don't have a coach and I've never been active until now, but I am in really good shape. I understand that a lot of your ability is genetics, but how much of it can be training? I am willing to work hard and train hard for this. I want to be more competitive, and I also just really enjoy the sport. Also, I can run a 5k in about 23 minutes...Is getting down to a 20 min. 5k realistic for me?

  1. It is possible, because you would be running about 7 minute miles.

The danger is you may be running too much to soon.

Running 3, halfs in 4 months is not giving your body enough recovery.

You should space the races farther apart.

Taking a minute each mile off of a 5K is very doable.

Train for faster paces, with less mileage than is required for the half.

You can race a 5k every week and still recover.

If you point for a half twice each year by increasing your mileage from the 5k races, by doing some 10Ks to stress yourself you should be able to reach that goal as well.
