How reliable are external hard drives? Which company makes the best? How much space?

Question

I want something that will save all my music and pictures, and I don't want to lose any of them. Should I buy a big external drive? I don't want to transfer it all to my new computer to just take up space. Or put them on CDs (it is about 60 g of stuff so it would take forever). These pictures are very dear to me so I need to know what is the most reliable. Thank you.

I have been using a Toshiba 260GB external drive for a couple of years and have found it totaly dependable.
