How reliable is a 1999 Peugeot 206?

My boyfriend is considering buying a 1999 Peugeot 206, with about a 1.2 to 1.4 engine, but we've been struggling a lot with his current car, which was a disaster of a 2002 Corsa 1.0, with an endless list of faults! Obviously, we're keen to replace it with a more reliable car, and we both really fancy a 206, but it needs to have relatively low insurance as it's his first year of driving so he doesn't want it to cost him a fortune! We've seen a fair number of 1999 Peugeot 206's going for about £1,400, does this sound a fair price and are they generally reliable cars? Please help!

  1. I don't understand you guys in Europe -- don't they sell Hondas or Toyotas over there?? Peugeots should all be sold with a lifetime towing service provided. NO - they are not reliable. The only thing they are reliable at is breaking.

  2. I would have thought so until I bought one 4 months ago. I had to put it through the mot which it failed the first time with a badly worn ball joint. the front strut was seized and a few other things. Then i had to replace the indicator switch before the retest which was coming on by itself. Now I have a bigger problem with oil in the coolant bottle which i've been told its the head gasket which cud cost me 300- 500. So no I don't think they are reliable. I'm sorry I got rid of my 1996 306 which I had for 5yrs with no bother.
