  1. In its stock form the 1996 5.8 L Volvo Penta engine was a joint venture of Outboard Motor Corp. and Volvo Penta of the Americas. It was based on the Ford 351 cid engine block and used either a 4bbl holly carburetor or an EEC 4 Ford Marine EFI system. Both were relatively trouble free systems and paired well with the marine drive packages available for the engine.

The EFI version is easy to start (turnkey), reliable, and responsive. A Ford EEC 4 scan tool is required to run diagnostics on the engine for EFI repairs or timing adjustment.

In it's Carberated version the engine is equally reliable but does require a more traditional marine starting procedure (place shifter in neutral detent, advance throttle, pump if req. leave at approx. 1/2-3/4 and turn key.... pull back to off idle after engine ignites.) The Carberated version also requires occasional adjustments to choke.

Both engines were rated as being able to run on 87-octane fuel.
