How reliable is nissan micra automatic transmission?

I'm looking to buy a cheap (under £1000) car for a friend who is learning to drive in automatic cars. I liked the idea of an old sytle Micra. The manual version is very reliable but i hear the automatic is not so good. Does anyone have any experince with these cars, and/ or can anyone recommend an alternative?

My wife has had a 1995 one for 18 months and it has never let her down, it is a bit short of power at take off but once you get it moving it is fine.
