Hi, I may be interested in moving to La Porte,TX for a job in Houston. Is La Porte a good place to live and would the commute to downtown Houston be realistic? What area of La Porte is nice?

Thanks.

  1. If you're working in downtown Houston, don't live in LaPorte.  Get somewhere closer to the interstates and commuter lines.  Traffic in Houston is terrible and LaPorte's pretty far out.

I agree on the Gulf being no great shakes.  I grew up in New England and when I moved to Houston, I was excited to be relocating near the ocean.  Within days of arriving, I drove to the Gulf and <blecchh> it was NASTY.  The water was brown, it stunk from the refineries and plants lining the coast.

I'm actually looking at moving to Friendswood myself.  Great, small school district, top 100 town to live in according to Money magazine and convenient to downtown.  Pearland's another short lister for me.

  2. I used to live in Seabrook and the commute to Houston was terrible, but it depends on what part of Houston you will be working in. I don't really consider LaPorte any great shakes. It's near Pasadena which means oil refineries and smell.

The Gulf Coast of Texas is really not that beautiful. If you want to live by the water, consider Lake Houston.
