  1. it's very safe.

If we talk about uruguay as a country I can say that is very safe and clean

if we talk about Montevideo, as any other big city has its own troubles.

The city is a bit dirty last times, but in spite of that is a very nice and kind city. The people is polite, friendly and the views are wonderful.

About the other cities.........they are great.

They have  something very different to another ones. Are very clean....very safe, and great landscapes.

I can recomend you to go to Colonia with  old portuguese city.......Salto with thermal baths...Trinidad with its  great zoo of native and wild animals that is among the best in the whole world....and Punta del Este with the wonderful beachs.

In Uruguay you still can breath nature. Go there and wont be disappointed.

  2. Like any big city there are a few scoundrels. As in Montevideo, The downtown area could use some paint. Kind of dreary looking. As a whole the country is safe

  3. Oh my gosh, I can't tell you how much I love Uruguay!  I spent some time there last Fall and I really didn't want to leave.  I'm still planning on going back at some point.  I'm a young woman and was traveling there with another female friend and we never ran into any problems.  People were really helpful and nice to us.  Montevideo is like any other big city and is a little dirty, but everywhere else was gorgeous.  Some of the rolling hills reminded me of Tuscany.  The government is really into conservation so there are a lot of nature reserves along the coast and the beaches are pristine.  I highly recommend traveling there if you're thinking about it!  Bon Voyage!

  4. Uruguay is clean and has beautiful countryside.

As for safety, I am not so sure though.  About a decade ago, while an expat in that country, my car's window was broken by two motorcycle-riding guys who hit my glass window into smitheereens with a helmet, and they got my bag on the passenger seat beside me.

That means, not only was I robbed but my car was also damaged.  Had to wait for the glass to be imported and installed only after two weeks passed.

With all my bank and credit cards in my bag together with some cash and IDs, they were able to learn where I lived and I felt hounded for almost two weeks.  I got paranoid thinking they were watching me when I got calls just after entering my building apartment every night.

But my personal experience could have been an isolated one, but It traumatized me.
