Question:

How safe are the L.A. Green and Blue Lines?

My wife and I are planning on moving out to L.A. soon and I am considering using the Metro to get to and from work. I will be working downtown right near Metro Center, so it works out nicely.

My main question is about the safety of the Green and Blue lines. We were thinking of moving to South Bay, so I thought a Green/Blue transfer to work, and a Blue/Green transfer coming home would do the trick. Only problem is that I have a job sometimes requiring late hours and I worry a bit about the trip home. Any insights on this? Thanks for your help!

  1. I used to take the blue and green lines to work from Dominguez Hills (Del Amo Station) to El Segundo (El Segundo Blvd Station). I did that for about a year and a half and didn't have too much trouble. The only times I'm on the metro late is when I go to Staples Center for events (there is a station right across the street). Oddly enough, I've never had any trouble on my late trips, although I always had someone else with me. As for the day trips to and from work, there was a couple of issues, one scary homeless guy came on and shouted at an invisible enemy for a while and a time or two obvious gangsters came on but they didn't bother anyone.

No place has a "no-problem" guarantee, but for the number of times I ride the metro, it seems relatively safe. I'd suggest that you keep aware of your surroundings and don't act like an idiot and you should be okay.

  2. It's basically safe on the entire Metro system.  The system is policed both by uniformed and plainclothes officers.  Be normally prudent (as in watching your wallet), just as you would in any urban area, and you will be fine.  Remember, the more good people ride the system, the better!

  3. you dont say where in the south bay you are

there are also some commuter buses that might better for you

LADOT has a direct bus from Downtown to Hermosa Beach

they also have another which operated along PCH to Palos Verde

Torrance transit also have service into Torrance

the metro also has buses express bus to Redondo beach,

    Palos Verdes

(but yes thee green Line and  blue are very safe as they

are camera every way plus the LA county sheriff patrols  the line

as well (as well as checking for tickets as well

  4. The trains are safe and fun, plus you'll save a bunch on gas prices.. I ride them about once a week going to downtown LA which is the blue line..

  5. They are perfectly safe in my opinion.  Of course you have to be careful, and don't fall asleep if you're alone or anything, but I don't think you have anything to worry about.

  6. metro system is safe overall. it has annoying cops wanting to check your buss pass/ fare ticket..but at night time it takes forever to arrive.

  7. I would say overall the rail system is quite safe, just be aware of your surroundings. Another thought is that from many locations in the South Bay you can save time by using a direct express bus to Downtown LA. Some lines that may serve your needs would be the MTA #444 Palos Verdes, Torrance LA express. The LADOT #448 Palos Verdes, Torrance PCH, Harbor City LA express. The Torrance Transit #1 & 2 between Torrance, Redondo Beach and Downtown LA The #439 El Segundo, Westchester Downtown LA express as well as several lines operating along the Harbor Freeway HOV lanes from points such as the Artesia transit center into Downtown LA. There are other routes as well depending upon where you are starting from. Good Luck and be sure to consider all the options to see which works best for your situation.
