Question:

How safe is Merida for Canadians?

I am interested in completing an intense language school for a month/possibly two months in Merida, Yucatan, Mexico in Febrary/March 2009. How safe is the city? How safe is it compared to cities in other regions of Mexico? I am a younger female and would be travelling alone. Are there any specific safety tips you would recommend if I decide to pursue this programme?

Thanks for any answers

  1. dont be such a wuss

  2. Merida is one of the safest cities in Mexico.  Look, the difference between Mexico City and Merida, on the safety issue is just like the difference between New York City and Sacramento (California).

On the "women traveling alone" issue, come on, it is Mexico, it is not an Arabian country.

  3. Mexican cities don't get any safer than Merida.

You have a better chance here in Canada of having issues.

If you look a little more like Brittany Spears than Rosie O Donal you know the extra precautions you have to take. Cozy up with a nice Mexican family and they will always have an eye out for your safety.

Most of the crime you HEAR of is in the border areas and petty crimes in D.F.

    Its very hot there.

I am not sure if a language school is part of your question but Harmon Hall are there.

there is an intensive course starting June 2nd.2008 and runs monthly in to the coming year.

Best to fax them unless your Spanish is good.

  4. its safe!... but like in all citys u should have like a peper spry or somenthing like that, dont travel with lots of money in ur bag! and doont talk to strangers!

  5. Merida Yucatan Not Just for Canadian but everyones

Merida is very safe. Additionally, host families and hotels are located in the safest places of the city. Just take normal precautions and never expose yourself to a risk situation.

  6. As the others have said Merida is very safe. Merida has the lowest rate of violent crime of any large Mexican city.

The people there are great. It is a beautiful city.

  7. I've been to Merida about six times and the worst thing I can say about the city is that the buses are LOUD.

    Safety tips:

Just be as careful as you would be in any large city in the world.

Don't flash your wealth (money or jewelry).

Don't go to the ATM after dark by yourself.

Don't get drunk and wander down a dark alley.

In a restaurant, don't put you laptop, camera or your pocketbook on the back of the chair.  Put them in you lap or on the floor with your foot through the straps.

Mexicans, for the most part, will not hold you up, but if you leave something unguarded, they will assume it was meant to be theirs and walk off with it.
