How safe is it for a person of Western origin ti live in Kerela India?

Perfectly safe -- in Kerala or in any other state -- India is a friendly place.  

Do your research on the area/city/town on the internet and read Lonely Planet or such books for a feel of things, India can be overwhelming in the cities at times, although it can be very exciting and absorbing as well  - rules of the road are different there, so don't expect things by western standards.

If female, dress appropriately --  keep your money safe,  read other do's and don't's,  -- before you get there.  Try to find a good local contact or two, just in case, and  keep a list of emergency numbers -- your nearest embassy, etc.

So long as it is not s*x, drugs and rock and roll or venturing into illegal things, you should have a pleasant time.

Its as safe as living in your home country. Kerala is A VERY FRIENDLY STATE.
