  1. At Border Patrol Academy they had these movies and load your weapon full of blanks to teach you when to shoot/don't shoot .  There was one where an evil looking guy reaches in his glove compartment, takes out a revolver, puts it on the seat, takes out a badge and says "Policia de Mexico"  Unfortunately, half the class put two bullets in his head when they saw the gun.

I think safe deposit boxes and permanently affixed safes in the home are fine.

  2. It's perfectly safe to carry a gun in your car. I have kept a loaded 9mm under my seat for years. I don't know how you can carry a gun when it is in a safety deposit box, but there wouldn't be anything unsafe about storing a gun there. It is impossible for a gun to go off by itself. A person has to either pull the trigger or drop the hammer on the firing pin manually, though this is possible with some handguns by dropping the gun and it landing on the hammer while the safety is not on. This is why I put the safety on if I am carrying the gun loaded.

PS. I wouldn't recommend you to use a trigger lock. Children have been known to break them off easily. Also they have been known to jam and not unlock at times. This could be a fatal disaster if you actually did need the gun. If you plan to lock the gun up for whatever reason DO NOT USE TRIGGER LOCKS!

  3. It is not at all safe to carry a gun. If you are not constantly aware of it, it can be introduced into a situation where it can be used against you. Far to many people think that if you point a gun at a bad guy, he will run. NOT TRUE. All to often the gun is taken and used against you. Many police officers are injured and die this way every year. If you have one at home and it is not secure (a good safe for instance) you can come home to find it stolen or worse yet, used against you. If you have children and I mean up past the age of 19 or 20, you will find that especially with boys, they are very interested in checking it out when you are not around. I have seen to many kids killed and parents who say "I didn't think Johnny knew where it was". They do. On the other hand if you learn, practice and secure your gun, they can be a valuable tool. I include hunting and self defense.

  4. How safe is it not to carry one?

The choice is yours to make.

If you carry, be CCW, Licensed and know how to fire your weapon, in case you may ever have to, (GOD FORBID) use it against another human being.

If you carry be prepared to defend yourself and family.

If at home, store in a safe accessible place out of the reach of children and with a gun lock on trigger guard.

  5. If you are going to carry a gun, I would not recommend keeping it in your car.  If you are forced to leave it in your car due to a visit to a place where firearms are prohibited (i.e. government buildings, hospitals, etc.) that's one thing.  But, if your car is broken into and your gun is taken, your gun can be used in the commission of a crime.  That's not good.  I would keep it on your person, providing you are licensed to carry it.  If you are going to leave it at home, a safety deposit box is a good idea especially if you have children.

  6. as safe and legal as you make it
