How safe is it to travel to Haiti at the moment?

My mum's Haitian and Dad's Aussie and I've only been to Haiti twice when i was heaps young. I want to visit family who are still there so how safe would it be for me to go over there??

I would not go.  I travel a lot and that is one place I would not visit.

Haiti as not being safe for a long time is just a case of kidnapping mostly in the capital that's being goin on for over three years now. i think if one really want to go they can i got family goin all the time but they don't stay in capital so you can go. one more most Haitian when they goin to Haiti they don't let anybody know until they really close to go. so i hope you go and have fun specially this month and next month during Kanaval.

With the exception of Labadee (Labadie) the country is still very unstable and the tourism sector is slowing re-emerging. Many UN peackeeping troops from Brazil and Uruguay are in the country for years.  If you were to go, try to go with someone who has gone before and can speak Kreyol (and French).  My friend who is Haitian recently went and she never encountered any problems due to the fact she spoke Kreyol and went to visit her relatives. Stay away from shantytowns, do not walk alone and travel in groups always, do not flash valuables and stay at a resort or hotel that can provide you security. There are many excellent hotels in beautiful Petionville such as Hotel El Rancho. The Hotel Oloffson is also a great and famous hotel that has had many celebrities who have stayed there.

Before leaving to Haiti, make sure to register with your country's embassy in Haiti, make copies of your passport biography page, and jot down important numbers to call in the event of an emregency.

I was just in the Dominican Republic and when i mentioned to my friends (who just moved there from the states and the UK) that I wanted to go over the boarder and re- check out Haiti because I had only been to Labadee  they like flipped out and told me not to go there because of the terrorism and civil unrest and wars going on. So I would advise you not to go. I have A friend who is Haitian and his grandparents and parents still live there and his family tells him its too dangerous to come and visit. So I would say don't go and Labadee is an exception of course because what it is is a private beach area that is leased by the Cruise line royal Caribbean and is highly guarded with security and gates and f***s and tons of check points and stuff.

If you could guarantee being met and escorted and looked after when you were there, then it might be all right for you.  It is some years since I was in Haiti and it was rather alarming there then in Port au Prince and even in the countryside when rara bands advanced on the place where our group was staying (it was Easter time) and all plans to go in the years since then have been routinely cancelled because of the danger.  Kidnapping is a very real threat and if word got round that you were a wealthy young woman from abroad you might be a target.
