I am 15 weeks pregnant and have had 3 recurring bladder infection in 6 weeks. So far, my baby has been okay, but since starting the last round of penicillin, I haven't really felt him move very much. He was fine on Wednesday, moving around and had a heartbeat of 150bpm, but I haven't felt him move since I started the penicillin.

The doctor gave me amoxicillin 500mg 3 times a day for 10 days.

I'd like to take a trip up to emerge just to see if they find a heartbeat, but at the same time, I don't. When I went on Wednesday for cramping and spotting, they called the social worker on me for "frequent visits"..I do not need that again.

What should I do? How safe is penicillin in pregnancy?

  1. It sounds like you may not have a primary care physician or an OBGYN and are using the emergency room.  This is why social work is being called.  You would be well advised to get an primary and an OBGYN then when you go in for visits and you can call and ask follow up questions - such as you have asked here.  You might also consider a midwife - who would also be a resource during your pregnancy.  You might also join a birthing group.  It sounds like you are very nervous and need reassurance - and you deserve this.

  2. it's safe in pregnancy.  very commonly prescribed in pregnancy.  it does not affect heart beat.  if you are on other medications, that might affect it.  but antibiotics have no cross reaction with the heart.

instead of going to the emergency room all the time, why don't you talk to the nurse at your obstetrician's office???

--34 weeks just finished a course of antibiotics

  3. You shouldn't take any drugs during pregnancy unless absolutely necessary, and even then, as little as possible for as short a time period as possible.  Your best source of info on this is your OB/GYN.  If you don't have one, get one immediately.  Taking medication while pregnant, you should be closely monitored, especially if you feel it is having adverse effects on your baby.  If that were me, I would stop immeditely until talking to my doctor.
