How safe is the Dominican Republic?

Question

I am going to the DR For a few months for be with friends. How safe is it in the day time/night time? Could i walk down the street at nite and feel safe? What should we watch out for? We will be living in a city for a few dias and in the mountans most of the time.

I can tell you like everywhere else you go, you should be aware of your surroundings and always trust your gut instict, other than that DR (dominican republic) is pretty safe. Yes, you can walk down the street and feel safe, be friendly with other dominicans but cautious. Try to be with someone or befriend a local person you feel you can trust to show you around and do not show like you have any money. I have been there many times and it is pretty safe.  But like every place you should use all precautions....

Hi Mark,

Like already told before, you will be pretty safe here in the Dominican ( more in the mountains than in the city) but generaly spoken there are no problems. You must have somebody with you to guide you and to explain the customs and at night you must be a little bit more cautious. Don't "show off" with expensive things to the poor people and you will be ok.

It is safe, use your best judgement like anywhere.  I have been there many times and have never had a problem.  I basically stay on the resort and book trips through the resort when leaving.
